ThriftBooks was started in 2003 by two entrepreneurs. They wrote the first version of the software to list and price books on Amazon.com. In 2004, ThriftBooks graduated from a storage unit to a warehouse on Mercer Street in downtown Seattle that was capable of holding 200,000 books. In 2006, we moved into a larger warehouse in Auburn, WA that was capable of holding 1 million books.
By 2007, we began growing the size of our team and over the course of the next 6 years, we added and still maintain facilities in Portland, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, St. Louis, Baltimore, and Reno. In 2016, we opened the largest facility to date in Chicago, IL. It is triple the size of our first facility in Auburn and handles 10 times the volume.
Mobile, International, and Segments
Along the way, we expanded sales to include ThriftBooks.com, which also offers a mobile app experience for iOS and Android. We sell internationally through Amazon in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and India. We have expanded the segments of customers we serve to include our Corrections Library Program.
The company has grown into a global enterprise serving millions of customers worldwide with the help of a team of over 900 dedicated employees. We’ve learned a ton along the way, inventing systems and software as we grew, and that spirit of entrepreneurial innovation lives on today. We are all looking forward to seeing what comes next.
We believe reading empowers people, offering them empathy to live for a moment in someone else’s shoes, offers them education, a critical asset to improving one’s life, and offers an occasional escape to fantastic worlds inhabited by interesting characters. Yes, we save millions of books every year from being destroyed, but our mission goes beyond the environment. We save these books and make them accessible to readers for the chance to shape another mind, share another story, and teach a bit of wisdom.
