Every Christian lives between pain and redemption. Some face suffering more acutely, but we all suffer at times, whether due to health, relational stress, loss, finances, trauma, or any other of a myriad of problems this life presents us. In a culture obsessed with ease, it's difficult to make sense of our suffering. As Christians, we can sometimes feel betrayed: Why does God allow us to hurt? Ten years ago chronic illness plunged therapist and writer...

A book full of hope!

Facing suffering takes courage, and it took me some time to find the courage to begin even reading this book. Who wants to take an honest, open look at what is most difficult in their life? Not only is that scary sometimes, but as K.J. Ramsey astutely highlights in her book, the concept of facing suffering can even repulse our pious, churched sentiments about strength and holiness. If you find yourself feeling that, look again at the subtitle: this book is about "finding grace" when suffering lingers. It recalled for me the truth that seeing and accepting your present situation, with all the joys and sorrows it entails, is the way to find it as the place Christ meets us, and this is good news! Weaving together therapy, theology, interpersonal neurobiology and the wisdom of countless saints and sufferers before her, K.J. truly offers a solid resource for those on the path towards healing, wholeness and holiness. If you are on this path (or you want to be!) let this book bring you through the next leg of the journey with community, wisdom and truth.

Living from the middle...

If you find yourself craving truthful, hope filled words of wisdom from a “trained professional” read this book. What it is not: a ray of sunshine so bright it will blind you, nor is it a dismal sad story to depress you. It is like “white noise” for your soul. This book is NOT boring, but it is filled with necessary words from a wordsmith who understands how valuable it is to share the testimony that has not been tied up with a pretty little ribbon. I’m in the middle of my own testimony regarding relationship issues and I am learning how to live and love the grace growers I get to do life with on the daily. This book reminded me that joy and suffering can co-exist in my life and sometimes it’s just the way things are. Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful and even if it feels unbearable sometimes, life is a gift worth living.

Finding Grace

This book is so needed in society (and our churches) today. For the first time, I read a book that shed serious light on what it's like to suffer long-term. The kind of suffering that puts you on a roller coaster through life- that doesn't seem to have an end. I read in this book how Jesus meets us there, the grace that's found, and how hope keeps us afloat as we suffer long. KJ Ramsey writes with fervor and truth and wisdom. She knows what it's like to sit in this place and not be seen. And she connects with fellow sufferers on a level that others can't. I can't recommend this book enough- if you are suffering or have any type of pain, if you know someone in your life who suffers, if you counsel,  if you are a ministry leader.. the list could go on. Basically, it's an excellent read for anyone. It is meaty though, so know upfront you will want to take your time and absorb it slowly.

A Unique Story from the Middle

All my life I’ve been handed stories of triumph; Suffering reflected on in the past tense. Stories that show me the goodness of God because of healing & victory. KJ Ramsey guides us using deep and solid Theological truths and neuroscience (she explains the smart people stuff in terms we lay people will track with!) into what it looks like to embrace Gods goodness from the middle of the story… right when suffering seems like it is settling in for good. I would urge every Pastor, church/ministry leader to pick up this book and let it lead them in the way they lead their people- especially when it hard times hit! This book is for chronic sufferers, but it’s also for every day folks- because whether or not you are stuck in the middle of a very painful story there will be people around who are. Learning from this book might just be the thing that rescues your relationships when your friend, relative, spouse, church member, neighbor falls into deep suffering. This book couldn’t have been released at a better time.
